After having been heavily bombed near the end of WWII and neglected during the socialist era, Dresden today is a beautiful city full of historical buildings and situated in the picturesque valley of the river Elbe. In 2004 the United Nation's cultural organization UNESCO declared Dresden and the surrounding section of the Dresden Elbe Valley to be a 'World Heritage' site.
